Magaldi

Magaldi is an Italian company with over 90 years of history, based on technological innovation and with hundreds of patents, a world leader in transport systems for high temperature solid materials with over 250 plants operating around the world. Based on its experience, Magaldi has designed, patented, developed and tested a new Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system called STEM-RES in its plants in Muccino (SA) and in the Sicilian facility of San Filippo del Mela, that is able to store high and very high temperature heat in solid materials, in particular silica sand in fluidized bed, in steel containers. The system is modular, economical, completely recyclable, and with great energy density; the characteristics of the fluid bed of sand make it more effective and efficient than all the other thermal energy storage technologies used to date.

What we have done

Technical-scientific advice

Magaldi has entrusted Studio Santi with the preliminary technology assessment of STEM-RES (which has already been classified as TRL-6 by a long due-diligence by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems) and with the technical-scientific supervision of the development and research of applications in the energy sector storage, both for the electricity sector (balancing renewable energies, recovery of disused thermoelectric plants and transformation into energy storage centers, flexibility of thermoelectric plants and cogeneration plants, etc.), and for the decarbonization of the industrial sector. The STEM-RES can in fact be charged both by waste heat (steam, hot air, etc.) and by electricity (resistances, air cannons) produced from renewable sources, and is able to return heat at variable temperatures and/or electricity through a power block. The modularity, the economy, the use of only common materials, the low environmental impact, the long life, make the STEM-RES ideal in intermediate energy storage applications between lithium-ion batteries (power intensive) and hydraulic pumping (energy intensive), in the range of a few tens of MW of power and about 10 hours of storage capacity, especially in the industrial sector which is difficult to electrify/decarbonise.
Studio Santi is studying the different applications of STEM-RES, designing the business cases for each application, drawing up a business plan for the diffusion of the technology in the various world energy markets, supervising and directing the maturation of the technology, assisting Magaldi in the feasibility studies conducted together with ENEL and Terna, as well as in relations with partners and stakeholders.
